Why should I service my septic system regularly?

Sludge build-up is unavoidable and regular septic service helps maintain manageable levels; averting the need for septic repairs. Having septic tank pumping done on a regular basis helps to ensure that your septic system

maintains a healthy liquid balance. Regular septic service and pumping

can assist in identifying potential problems that may lay below the surface.

In addition to regular septic service, here are a few things you can do to increase efficiency and reduce the potential for problems with your septic system: Divert rainwater (or water from hoses) away from your septic leach field. If your leach field is too full of water it won’t drain properly and it will have problems absorbing waste. Reduce the load on your septic system by conserving water. For example, do laundry throughout the week instead of all at once, use flow-reducing nozzles on showers, and wash full loads in your dishwasher.

Alaska Zipline Adventure Park, LLC is owned and operated by the Sloan and Katie Sunderland, second generation ranchers and hay farmers in the Matanuska Valley.

Over time, they have expanded the original Sunderland Ranch by 280 acres. They are passionate about keeping this land farming and sharing the lifestyle with guests and youth.

Sunderland Ranch offers a full trail ride service, western arena activities, and kids ranch camps and programs. Sloan and Katie also operate the Legacy Mountain Lodge, a custom hand scribed log lodge made available for weddings, private parties or groups to stay right on the ranch.

Before the purchase of the Zipline property in 2019, the property was used an early 1950’s grain farm. The original structures are still standing and in use from before the 1964 earthquake.

Sloan and Katie started zipline plans in 2020 and began construction in 2021 with the goal of finishing construction and open in early summer 2022.

AZAP is Alaska’s first and only all-tandem zipline course and is located in the Chugach Mountains just outside of Palmer, Alaska.

OUR STORY

Sunderland Ranch is a working ranch established over forty years ago by Wick & Candy Sunderland. After selling their cattle business in Homer Alaska, they purchased this agricultural parcel at a borough auction sight unseen. What a lesson in faith! They had truly found where they were called to be.

While clear-cutting and building barns and structures, they also built a solid set of values that are carried on by generations to follow. God, family, love and hard work are foundations that the Sunderland Ranch still stands on today.

You will chuckle as you hear Wick tell the stories of his Alaskan adventures while he handles many of the day-to-day farm tasks. Candy, in all her warmth brings a sense of belonging to arriving guests.

Sloan & Katie and their family, owner operators, have brought fresh energy to the ranch as they have broadened their vision to include Ag-Tourism. They have expanded into trail rides, farm tours, and ranch camp programs for youth. They also operate the newly opened Alaska Zipline Adventure Park on the ranch.

They are both committed to passing ranching skills and a love for the land on to the next generation. The 350-acre ranch is one of the larger timothy hay producers in the Matanuska Valley. They also graze and raise Angus cattle.

Skeetawk is derived from the Dena’ina word Shk’ituk’t, which means “where we slide down,” and was the original Dena’ina name for the village before it was later renamed Kenai.

Hatcher Alpine Xperience (HAX) is the 501c3 not for profit organization that manages Skeetawk; a skiing, snowboarding, and alpine recreation facility in Hatcher Pass Alaska. HAX was incorporated as a not for profit organization in 2015 and has worked closely with the Matanuska Susitna Borough to develop the recreation facility. Skeetawk is located at mile 10.6 of the Palmer-Fishhook road in the Hatcher Pass State Management area, in the Northern Government Peak Sub-Unit of the detailed 2010 Hatcher Pass Area Management Plan. The parking lot sits at about 1,450 feet above sea level and our new beginner (triple seat) chair for runs about 1,250′ long and has a vertical gain of about 300 feet, giving us access to about 30 skiable acres.

Hatcher Pass has an extensive history of both backcountry skiing and lift serviced ski facility development projects. A ski area has been proposed in the Northern Government Peak Sub unit for over 40 years. Most of the development plans have focused on development of the same tract that Skeetawk is currently located in. Many national and international development firms failed to deliver a viable plan for development of a ski area in Hatcher Pass. The grassroots efforts by HAX have taken a dream to a reality in 5 short years by developing a multi phased plan to build a regional alpine recreation facility on land leased from the MatSu Borough.  

In 2016, HAX entered a land management agreement with the MatSu Borough. By 2017, enough funds had been raised to build the first facility; Dave’s SnoCat Haus. This first facility served as a grooming facility and base of operations for further construction work on site. Trail clearing, additional parking improvements, and additional utility infrastructure work took place through 2018. By 2019; HAX had raised enough funding to begin construction of the first ski lift, warming facility, and support buildings for Phase 1A of operations. In the summer of 2019 construction of the ski lift and warming facilties began. After some delays, the ski lift and associated facilities where completed in spring of 2020. HAX signed a 40 year lease agreement with the MatSu Borough for the property in the summer of 2020. 

Skeetawk will continue to plan and develop the next phases of ski area development. Skeetawk has one year-round professional staff member and a crew of seasonal staff to work alongside dedicated volunteers to operate and develop the facility for the benefit of the community. Skeetawk will remain a community driven ski area directed by a volunteer board of directors; and managed by professional recreation and ski industry leaders for the foreseeable future.

We have completed phase 1a of our plan. We will continue to fund raise for snowmaking, a day lodge, and phase 1b. If you are interested in contributing to the project, please send your inquiries to info@skeetawk.com
